Through the technology of cellular phones, it would seem one of the favorite activities people enjoy today is taking self photographs. In fact, it is so popular that additional tools have been created to help in this endeavor. Rod-like extension objects to hold the phone steady and further extending are used to be able to take group photos. Hence the new terminology name, “selfie.”
Something else that is new on the horizon but not so much fun is the rise in cases of Myopia, that is, nearsightedness. In a recent article from the magazine Nature, the following was reported: “Sixty years ago, 10-20% of the Chinese population was short-sighted. Today, up to 90% of teenagers and young adults are. In Seoul, a whopping 96.5% of 19-year-old men are short-sighted.” Although this is not limited to any particular age group or region in our world, one of the reasons suggested as a possible cause for this dilemma is the fact that people spend so much time looking at computer screens or hand-held devices. Perhaps we are spending too much time absorbing the light, looking only as far as our arms are able to reach, rather than beyond into the bigger world. Certainly, statistics would say this is quite possible, at least physically speaking.
Taking selfie photo’s with our devices can actually be a lot of fun especially when we share them with others. Just as in the physical world we need to absorb light in order to obtain a photograph, in a Biblical sense, you and I are called by God to actually become the light in order to reflect the love of Christ to others. “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” [Matthew 5:14-16] We can’t always control our physical Myopia but spiritual nearsightedness is definitely a choice!
As you begin another day, remember, YOU are a “photograph” to those around you. Are you merely absorbing the light or will you actually be “The Light?”
Heavenly Father, You alone bring light into our world. Sometimes, by all appearances, it seems the darkness of evil will overtake us. Show me how I can be The Light and shine with the brightness of truth, in love, in Jesus, to those around me. AMEN
To The One Who created the light and then, became The Light…Jesus!
